MONGOLIAN felt trip
In July, 2008.

Christine Martens and Janice Arnold visited on a trip Mongolia. The only trip that fit their expectations and their schedule was a felting trip. It was organized by us. This trip was very successful. We are so glad for having  working with them. They are very lovely, friendly people. After trip they made film and designs.

Janice Arnold (www.jafelt.com) has made it her life to know and understand Felt. She has researched and worked with nomadic tribes of Central Asia and Mongolia and studied the high tech world of industrial felt.

West-coast felt-maker Janice Arnold was intrigued by the form of the museum’s conservatory. Its domed roof and iron mullions resemble the radiating struts of the framework of a ger (yurt)—the circular tent dwelling of the nomadic tribes who first created felt. Arnold’s design is a fantasia on the ger (yurt) form.

Fashioning Felt presents an extraordinary range of felt. From two-dimensional carpets to three-dimensional environments, each work reveals the virtuosity of both the material and the designers. The exhibition and book focus on felt that has been produced by traditional hand- or machine-felting processes; they exclude non-woven felt and techniques, in order to underscore the essential elements of feltmaking — wool fiber, agitation, moisture, and pressure.

Mongolian Felt workshop in England
April, 2007

I participated IFA's Felt conference in Swansea, England, March-April 2007. After conference of Mongolian felt rug embroidery-Shirmel and Kazakh quilting on felt workshop organized International Felt makers Association - Region 9 Coordinator, Melanie Bermingham (melanie.bermingham@btinternet.com) at Staffordshire open studio. Each workshop lasted 4 hours; I had to be very careful to get through the planned program in time. They were very friendly, welcoming, informal atmosphere on felting workshop which helped everyone get to know each other quickly and got the creative juices flowing. This meeting was exchanging experience of felting method and design. They were teaching me embroidery felt and printing felt. I was so happy to met with them.
